Oh no, not a government shutdown!!

As I write this, my home state of Michigan is looking at the terrifying prospect of a government shutdown. And how are they trying to scare us into avoiding that? By letting us know, with a stearn look in there eye, that if the government shuts down there will be no...Liquor deliveries to stores, lotto tickets sold or casino's open!....*gasp*!

That's right, the government is so aware that we don't give a damn if they're not around, they try to scare us into caring for them by telling us they'll have to take our vices away. The irony here is that these are the same vices that raise the most revenue either through current taxes or inevitable future "sin" taxes. Hence Michigan will continue do what it is already so good at doing; cut off its nose to spite its face.

What is apparently the main sticking point here is that some legislators don't want to simply raise the state sales and income tax without cutting costs as well. Their thinking is that the government can't continue to pay for its fical irresponsibility by squeezing more money out of the taxpayers. They feel there should be some cuts to spending as well...What a novel concept and, given the mindset of our governor, probably illogical!

Why Gov. Granholm might find this thinking illogical is based on her strategy so far to save the state...To draw more tourists she supports an additional tax on hotels & motels. To bring more business into the state she fought hard for revival of a business tax that had been removed. To show how to reduce our need for consumption of foreign oil she did a photo-op whereby she pumped E87...INTO HER SUBURBAN...Not Focus or Cavalier or even 300m...SUBURBAN!! This is also a state leader who recognized a forthcoming shortage in nurses in the state. So, as opposed to encouraging colleges to promote their nursing program or even offer tax credits for getting a degree in nursing she simply allocated $10 million for a program to recruit people into nursing. Yes indeed, this is a Governor who is truly in touch with fiscal responsibility.

This may be a hard lessoned learned for our government officials, but it least there MIGHT BE a lesson learned. Shut down, Lansing! I will save a little of my hair from not scratching my head at foolish legislation and if I want my hooch, gambling or lottery tickets I'll just do what everyone else does already anyway; I'll cross the border to Canada, Ohio or Indian and get my fix!

Let's face it Jenny, you need to come up with a better scare tactic than that to get me to support handing over more of my money to you.
