Hooray New Orleans! Yeah Right.

I don't have a link for you to reference because it's not really necessary. Anyone who was conscious this past Monday or Tuesday know all about the touching and powerful event known as FOOTBALL BACK IN THE SUPERDOME. All during the Monday night game the camera panned the crowd for inspirational images of New Orlean's residents back on their feet again and showing the pride and resilience that is New Orleans. Now for what I saw...

I saw a city that is STILL below sea level in a hurricane-risk area. Meaning, the whole "Katrina" thing can (and probably will) be relived.

I saw a city that, because of the aforementioned observation, should never have been re-built after the "devastating" hurricane Camille; but is being rebuilt again for the next "devastating" hurricane coming...And it WILL come.

I saw a FOOTBALL STADIUM refreshed for an NFL game (probably with "public funds" - i.e. tax dollars), while up the road a spell there were several homes and entire blocks still decimated.

I saw several signs in the crowd passing messages to the effect "We can overcome...If you send more money" and "What are you people (or the government) going to do to help us rebuild?".

In essence, I saw a community that didn't learn its lesson from 40 years ago, asking others to pay for its mistakes.

Residents of New Orleans, your city was built on a swamp and is prone to becoming Atlantis every time a strong storm passes through. There was a lot of complaining about the government not helping you get out when the storm was coming but the same thing happened 40 years ago and y'all either stayed or moved back afterwards...40 years would have given you a hell of a head start on escaping from Katrina, even without a car! But I guess it's easier to say the government failed you than it is to admit maybe you didn't make the best decision regarding residency.

Look, the money is going to flow...Corruption is going to follow. Against my better judgment I'm going to say let's go ahead and crack the checks one last time to all those poor souls who are "entitled" to compensation for making bad choices in life. However I want this caveat: For each person that accepts a check, I want them to sign an agreement that they will either move away from this high-risk area, or void their claims to any future financial compensation in the event they stay and another storm wrecks their life. At some point the money spigot must be turned off.

I'd write some more but I just came across a great money making opportunity I need to get on. I'm going to plant some rare & expensive trees in the hills of California. Screw the fire insurance, Arnie just declared a state of emergency in Ventura County which means potential FEDERAL money....I gotta get my seedlings in by the next fire season!!
