The Horror of Recent "Supreme" Court Decisions
Frankly, I'm terrified.
First, the "Supreme" Court rules that the Federal government can over-ride individual state's laws regarding the medical use of marijuana. In essence, the Court let it be known that Big Brother can trample over laws passed by citizen vote in an individual state.
More recently, the "Supreme" Court made a decision expanding the rule of emminant domain. At one time I believed emminant domain was barely palatable, but at least you could win in court if there was a greedy company out there trying to low-ball someone off their hard-earned property. Now, thanks to the "Supreme" Court, not only the government can take your property (usually at below fair market value), but now any private John Q. Business-Owner who claims to be building "to offer jobs" can bounce you off your land (probably at even further than below fair market value)!
I used to admire the "Supreme" Court. I used to feel that, in a country where most politicians will legislate for you based on how thick your wallet is, the "Supreme" Court offered some common sense. Not so much anymore.
Who protects us now? If we as voters in our state pass a law, but Big Brother can now just sweep in and erase it...Who protects us? If I can live in a home for years, paying taxes and obeying the law, and Burger King can now decide to pave my property because they're going to offer "more jobs"...Who protects us? Nope, don't look to the "Supreme" Court, it ain't them!
The days are getting terrifying. First the "PATRIOT Act" to protect us from ourselves, then the government slapping states-rights away and now emminant domain being broadened to allow private citizens to usurp land from other citizens. And all along, the "Justices" of the "Supreme" Court are putting more thought into their fishing trips and private speaking engagements than protecting the Constitution and, by extension, the huddled masses trying to hide behind the ever-shrinking protection of rights the Constitution offers.
I think I understand now why I keep waking up screaming in the middle of the night with the fading images of a waving red flag with a hammer & sickle sewn into the cloth. Brush up on your Orwell, boys & girls, we're slowly but surely heading into his world

Great article. I had to laugh out loud at the hammer & sickle reference.
