Gays Want To Get Married. So What?!

So, today the Oregon court system invalidated some gay marriages performed in the state. As I understand it there was a lobbying group, the "blah, blah, something-Family-something" that was "relieved" at the court decision. I have a question regarding their reaction: Why?

Why would anyone care who gets married as long as A) The couple is consenting adults...And ...B) The marriage does not affect the rights of anyone else? I just don't get it.

I don't want to hear about the "sanctity" of marriage. With a 50%+ divorce rate in the United States and couples cheating on each other like they are hormonal teenagers in high school, heterosexual couples are very effective at corrupting the sanctity of a marriage.

Another feeble argument is how the bible says "it ain't right"! This is the same bible that condones sexual relations with daughters, having multiple wives and entities painting doors so that angels of death know which babies to kill. With all due respect; I'd just as soon not let THAT bible define "sanctity".

And what I REALLY don't want to hear about is how church leaders don't accept gay marriage. Counted in the pantheon of "church leaders" are the likes of Jimmy Swaggert and Jim Baker. I can think of better sources to foist moral turpitude than those two. Oh, I almost forgot, catholic priests fall into the category of "church leaders"...I don't think we want to go there.

So I guess that only leaves us basic humans on earth making the judgment call for gay marriage. Where I'm lost on this one is, what chapter and verse in whatever holy book we believe in gives us clearance to make judgment on others? I'm not THAT well versed in all the religious writings, but I'm pretty sure in all the stories it's God, Allah or whomever the Ultimate Being is that gets to make the heavenly pass/fail test in the afterlife. I'm POSITIVE neither Tom, Dick nor Mary has been deputized by God to speak for Him (Her...It).

So, let's make a deal those of you who want to deny two people in love the ability to marry. You don't judge gays on their lifestyle and deny them lifestyle choices and I won't judge you as the bible-thumping, hypocritical whack-jobs you are. How about we let GOD sort all this out a little later down the road.

Deal?

BRILLIANT! Well...I am biased, being a bona fide fruit loop for many years, but still! Very well written and you have keenly countered many of the common opposition points to gay marriage. I wish I could be so eloquent when arguing the point.

Two comments: first, though I understand your mentioning the "catholic leaders" in the context of overall moral scale, I hope some of your less scrutinizing fans won't skim the text and make a false connection between "Gay" and "Pedophile Catholic Priest." DOH!

Second, I made a correction in the following phrase: "God, Allah or whomever the Ultimate Being is" should read: "God, Allah or whomever the Ultimate BeingS ARE..."

Heh. Pagan joke. :-)
