USATODAY.com - Army offers 15-month hitch
Yeah, this is believable.
People are signing up so infrequently to go to the quagmire known as the Middle East that the U.S. military is resorting to specious promises of short active duties to draw fine young citizens in.
Why do I think the claims are specious? Well, one only has to ask any of the myriad of troops that have had their tours extended to know that the military has no compunctions about reneging on terms of service agreements. I pity even more the soldiers who thought they were all set for retirement only to be told (NOT by the recruiter years ago who made the promises), "Sorry, but country requires you to stay in the desert a tad bit longer. You'll be going home soon - WE PROMISE".
What's even funnier is that the military says that after 15 months, if you live through the sandstorms, you can go to the "safety" of National Guard units! Cool!! That's a good way to lure potential troops in because we all know none of the National Guard units are being sent to the Middle East. I'll bet a check of the records will show no National Guard members (especially Guard members with families and jobs back in the States) have been killed in Iraq.
I've got an idea for increasing recruiting. How about any tour of duty promises the military makes to the new recruit they have to keep? Better yet, how about we keep American soldiers on American soil? How about, in the unfortunate event one of the brave American soldiers dies during battle, that soldier dies on American soil defending Americans?! How about considering those ideas to get young people in the prime of their lives to make the ultimate commitment?
I hope the bright young citizens of America are wary of the new military promises. Remember, signing on the dotted line for military duty these days lasts a LOT longer than the recruiters handshake.
